Summit Award

Alexandra Diamond, a member of Crew 51 sponsored by the Cornerstone Fellowship Church, is the first Scout in Chester County Council to have earned Venturing’s newest and highest award, the Summit Award.

The Summit Award is the fourth and highest Venturing program level award. It is awarded to those Venturers who have matured in their personal direction, skills, life competencies and who have accepted the responsibility to mentor others and serve their communities in a lasting way. Several of the key points to earn this award include mentorship of other crew members, demonstrated leadership and the development and implementation of longer range, larger life impacting personal growth.

To help demonstrate and put into practice their personal vision of leadership and growth, each Summit Award candidate is required to plan, develop and give leadership to a community service project. Alex chose to do her project at the Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site near Elverson, PA. Her project was to install ADA compliant handrails on some of the locations original stairs, opening them up for use by the public to enable easier access to the lower level of the site. This project was a dream of the Historic Site and the work Alex and her team did turned that dream into a reality. Since the project was to be done at a National Historic Site, there were a lot of regulations that had to be followed  and significant limitations on how the project could be constructed. Working with the Hopewell Furnace Historical Society, Park maintenance and several skilled craftsmen, Alex was able to develop and carry out a plan that met everyone’s requirements. The end result was stairs that are now being safely used  by the public.

Shortly after the completion of her project but before a Board of Review could be conducted, Alex left the area to attend Air Force Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training. Although she is still in school, Crew 51 and the Horseshoe Trail District Advancement Committee were able to arrange for the Board of Review to be conducted using skype with participants in PA, VA and TX. As Alex was made aware of her being awarded the Summit Award by the Board of Review, Mr. Dean Kaiser, Crew 51 Associate Advisor, placed a call to David Diamond, the very proud father of Airman Diamond and the newest recipient of the Summit Award to share the news.
