Health and Safety Training

Health and Safety are vital to running and working with Scouts and Scout leaders. The following resources and information are provided to enable adult leaders and youth to help us maintain our impeccable safety record.

Climb On Safely

“Climb On Safely” covers eight key safety points about climbing and rappelling and is recommended for adult leaders organizing any type of climbing outing. You will watch a brief video broken into three sections and answer questions after each section.

Hazardous Weather Training

Hazardous Weather training must be completed prior to requesting a tour permit from the BSA. The module presents safety precautions for eight different types of weather, as well as planning, preparation, and traditional weather signs.

Hazardous Weather Training certification is valid for two years.
Safety Afloat/Safe Swim Defense

All boating activities in Scouting are required to follow the nine basic principles of Safety Afloat. With an emphasis on accident prevention through proper preparation and skills, a unit that follows Safety Afloat can expect a safe, enjoyable activity.

All swimming activities in Scouting are required to follow the eight basic principles known collectively as the Safe Swim Defense plan. A unit that follows the plan can expect a safe, enjoyable aquatic experience.

Trek Safely

“Trek Safely” covers seven key safety points about trekking and is recommended for adult leaders organizing any type of trek. You will watch a brief video broken into two sections and answer questions after each section.

Venturing Youth Protection Training

This course is required for Venturing leaders who have direct contact with youth. This training will help leaders understand and guide youth through possible problems as it relates to abuse. You will also learn about the issues you may face as a leader to help provide a safer environment for the crew members and to protect yourself from false accusations.

Venturing Youth Protection certification must be renewed every year.
Wilderness First Aid

Wilderness First Aid Basics is a 16 hour training course offered by the Chester County Council and certified by the American Safety and Health Institute

  • Who: For BSA registered adults and youth, minimum age 15
  • Why: To meet requirements mandated of units organizing a Philmont trek and/or to become a better prepared Scout. This course also fulfills the core first aid requirement for the Venturing Ranger Award.
Wilderness First Aid certification is valid for three years. 
Youth Protection Training

The Boy Scouts of America places the greatest importance on creating the most secure environment possible for our youth members. New leader applications will not be processed without a certificate of Youth Protection Training for the applicable unit. Youth Protection Training must be taken by any adult registered with a Pack, Troop, District Committee, or Council as well as all Merit Badge Counselors.
